Welcome to the Cove: Claire Collins, Junior Graphic Designer

We’re thrilled to add a new team member to the Hencove roster. Claire Collins joins the Cove as a Junior Graphic Designer and (almost) recent graduate of Boston University. As Claire wraps up her last college class this month, she’s diving into client work, bringing a fresh perspective, and elevating our team’s skills (and fashion sense!).

We chatted with Claire about what inspired her to study graphic design, how design fits into B2B marketing, and what she’s been crocheting lately.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am originally from Providence, Rhode Island, and later moved to the Boston area to study at Boston University. I am currently finishing up my last class (so close!) and will graduate in May with a BFA in Graphic Design and a minor in Advertising.

Why did you choose to study design?

I have always been interested in art and design. Since I was young, I’ve been drawing, painting, sewing, and doing anything and everything creative. When it came time for college, I spent a year undecided and then realized I could turn my hobbies into a career in graphic design. Design combines two of my strengths: art and communication, so it felt like the perfect fit.

Why Hencove?

Prior to Hencove, most of my job experience included interning in-house for brands but I was interested in finding an agency for the opportunity to work on an array of projects. Once I began the interview process with Hencove, the people stood out to me immediately—I had great conversations with everyone I talked to. It feels so good when an interview flows like a natural conversation. I could tell Hencove had a great work environment and a very strong team.

What has been the greatest adjustment from college to the “real world?”

I think having the ability to focus on one job instead of a bunch of different classes and obligations has been a big adjustment, in a good way. Throughout college, I’ve taken classes, had internships, and worked part-time jobs, so it always felt like I was pulled in lots of different directions, running from one thing to the next. Now, I can focus on the work that I love doing.

What is your role at Hencove? And what does a typical day look like for you?

I am a Junior Graphic Designer at Hencove. I work on all sorts of projects from LinkedIn post graphics to web design, while also getting to learn new skills. A typical day includes a morning team huddle, working on multiple client projects, collaborating with the team and collecting feedback, and making design revisions.

What is your favorite part of working at Hencove so far?

I love the variety of projects I’ve been able to work on so far. I’m starting to get more familiar with all of our clients and the type of work that I enjoy doing. Working at Hencove is so different from school, where I’m focused on more repetitive and predictable assignments. It feels so fulfilling to be able to work on real-world, valuable projects that benefit our clients.

How do you see design fitting into B2B marketing?

Design is playing a bigger role in B2B marketing now more than ever. In the past, B2B companies stuck to simple, “corporate” style branding, but now they’re willing to experiment with more color and unique design styles. Design-wise, there is a lot more thought going into logos, websites, and other marketing materials, and I’m excited to be a part of that. I think design is a great way for B2B businesses to stand out in their industry.

What do you think makes a great visual brand? Do you have any favorite brands?

A great visual brand is unique and recognizable. Some brands that I love, and think are doing a great job, include Olipop with their fun and colorful packaging, On Running with their simple, product-based branding, and of course, Glossier with their extremely recognizable colors and packaging.

What’s a B2B marketing trend that you think will stick around?

Social media marketing will stick around for sure. I’m seeing companies put a lot more effort into their social accounts, especially LinkedIn, in the B2B space. And blogs, podcasts, and videos are also a part of that. It’s increasingly important for businesses to have a well-rounded online presence.

What are you most looking forward to during your time at Hencove?

I’m not even a month into working at Hencove and I’m already learning so much. I’m looking forward to all the new skills and knowledge I can absorb from the rest of the team during my time here. Everyone encourages learning and developing new skills; it is a perfect first job!

What advice would you give to someone in college or just out of college that’s looking for a job?

During my job search, I interviewed for a few positions that weren’t exactly what I was looking for, and my dad gave me the best advice: He asked me if those jobs would get me closer to my career goals and told me not to take a job just because it’s there. Some jobs aren’t the perfect fit; being happy and enjoying the job you have is what’s important. Keep looking for what feels perfect to you. It might take some time (it took me six months!), but you will find it.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I have a lot of hobbies, but recently, I’ve been learning to crochet. I’ve made a hat, a sweater, and even a little stuffed dog. It’s a great, relaxing activity to do while watching a show or listening to music.

How do you wind down after work?

Taking a walk with a friend is always a nice way to wind down after work, especially since the weather has been getting warmer. It’s nice to get a little exercise while chatting about my day. 

Which country do you wish you could visit?

I am very lucky to have made it to many European countries, but I have yet to visit Italy. As a huge fan of Italian food, nothing sounds better than a bowl of pasta by the Amalfi Coast.

Favorite day of the week and why?

I love Thursday. It’s always a productive day with the excitement and anticipation of the weekend to keep me motivated.

What is a fun fact about you that few people are aware of?

I walked a marathon! A few years ago, some friends and I were bored (this was during the COVID lockdown) and we came up with a plan to walk 26.2 miles. There is a bike path near my parent’s house that’s a little over 13 miles long and stretches through nearly half of Rhode Island. We walked the length of the path and back, which took around 8 hours in total. I was not prepared for how sore I would be the next day!
