Get Out! Time to Make History

Get Out! Time to Make History

"And the Oscar goes to…"

These five words are familiar to all of us and for some, we even dream to hear our name accompany them one day. At the 90th Academy Awards, Jordan Peele fulfilled his dream and made history doing so.

Peele wrote and directed the social thriller, Get Out, which traces the bizarre interactions and disturbing discoveries a black man uncovers when he visits his wealthy white girlfriend's parents for the weekend. Peele received the Oscar for best original screenplay - he was also nominated for directing - becoming the first black person to win in that category.

Peele's night was momentous and offers plenty of life lessons. His acceptance speech, in particular, teaches us about perseverance, as he revealed the tremendous self-doubt he faced that almost stopped him from finishing the screenplay.

"I stopped writing this movie about 20 times because I thought it was impossible. I thought it wasn't going to work. I thought no one would ever make this movie. But, I kept coming back to it because I knew if someone let me make this movie, that people would hear it and people would see it. So, I want to dedicate this to all the people who raised my voice and let me make this movie."

Peele has also noted in a number of interviews that he worked on the outline and story for about five years and, even then, wasn't sure that the story would ever make it to the big screen. Once the script was picked up, he took control of its direction - and ultimately, the film became the most profitable movie of 2017

We all hit roadblocks in writing, and in life, but if you truly believe in your work and your story, then you owe it to yourself to see it through to completion.

You never know - you could make history.
